Cardiology

The Department of Cardiology at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine was established in 1985 as the Division of Cardiology within the Department of Internal Medicine under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Necmi Değer. During its early years, in addition to the cardiology ward and coronary intensive care unit, right heart catheterization and permanent pacemaker implantation procedures were initiated using the angiography equipment of the Department of Radiology. Echocardiography laboratory services were also provided under a protocol established with Antalya SSK Hospital.

In 1990, the Division of Cardiology was reorganized as the Department of Cardiology. Diagnostic and therapeutic cardiological interventions began to be performed in the Hemodynamics and Cardiovascular Interventions Laboratory established within the existing hospital building of Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine. The first catheter-angiography procedures were performed in 1995, and in the same year, primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) began to be provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with cardiac surgery stand-by support.
